Testing

For best security, all supporting components should be thoroughly tested before testing Starfish. If any component tests fail, do not proceed to test Starfish until all problems have been identified and corrected.

It would be wise to run the Starfish agent under reduced privilege during testing. To this end, the launch script supplied with the distribution attempts to run the agent under the username nobody. The agent logs messages to syslog, whose log files can be monitored for relevant activity.

A simplified test manager called starfishtest can be used to verify communication between manager and agent. Software problems are much easier to diagnose in the test manager than in the full Starfish manager.
